It all started many years ago when the Franciscan Range's igneous rock, known as greenstone, was altered through metamorphism. Pressed and heated during the movement of tectonic plates, it has developed the durability and hardness to meet city, state and commercial specifications for construction purposes.

Dean & Bo started their journey by taking over the operations at the Mark West Quarry, near Calistoga, on April 1, 1989. Before the Soilands took it over, this quarry ran as a crushed stone operation under several different operators going back to 1910.

The Soilands wanted to design the Mark West Quarry to reduce costs, run safely and reduce environmental impacts. One feature of achieving these goals was to design the quarry around a benching system. By constructing these benches, BoDean Company was able to greatly improve storm water and sedimentation discharge to Porter Creek. It also improved safety and reduced material handling costs.

In the 1980's the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors developed the "Aggregate Resource Management Plan" (ARM Plan). In order to reduce impacts and preserve the Russian River, the ARM Plan called for reduced terrace and instream mining within the Middle Reach of the Russian River. In 2006, the ARM Plan called for the complete phase-out of all terrace mining.

However, Sonoma County uses over 5 million tons of aggregate per year in order to maintain and improve its infrastructure. Knowing that the ARM Plan called for increased reliance upon hardrock quarries, instead of mining within the Russian River, BoDean Company purchased the Blue Rock Quarry in Forestville in 1997, and began doing business as Mark West Aggregates. BoDean Company went through great expense to design the Blue Rock Quarry around the same model as its Mark West Quarry. By doing so, the quarry in Forestville runs with environmental and cost efficiency in mind.

In 2001 BoDean Company acquired its Asphalt Plant in Santa Rosa and returned to doing business as BoDean Co., Inc. At this plant BoDean recycles asphalt and concrete into road base, and of course, it sells high quality asphalt.

In 2006 BoDean Company committed to using Biodiesel in its rolling stock and operating its office buildings under solar power - This all being done to be a leader in the use of cleaner alternate fuels and power sources in order to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and operate as a responsible neighbor to the communities surrounding our facilities.
